BHM-JOB-SYSENG01

Lead Systems & Software Engineer

Own and evolve BlueHarbor's entire digital backbone — the internal Operations platform, the public website, and the data, integrations and automation that run a modern marine & engineering company. This is a build-and-run leadership role for an exceptional engineer who wants to build an institution, not a prototype.

Responsibilities

The role

  • Own the architecture, delivery and reliability of BlueHarbor's systems: the internal Operations platform, the public website, and the services and integrations that connect them.
  • Design and build secure, well-modelled PostgreSQL data with row-level security, auditable access and clean APIs.
  • Ship features end to end — modern TypeScript/React front-ends, serverless/edge functions, storage and authentication.
  • Integrate AI responsibly into operational workflows: document intelligence, recruitment, finance controls and credential verification.
  • Establish engineering discipline: version control, code review, CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, backups and incident response.
  • Harden security and privacy — access control, secrets management, data protection and compliance.
  • Lead and mentor a small team (a Deputy Systems Engineer and a Systems Assistant) and set technical standards.
  • Partner with the CEO, COO and HR to turn operational needs into dependable systems, and keep the platform ahead of the company's growth.

Requirements

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience building AND running production web systems end to end (front-end, back-end, data, deployment).
  • Strong TypeScript/JavaScript and modern React
  • solid relational database and SQL, PostgreSQL preferred.
  • Experience with serverless/edge functions, authentication, file storage and API design.
  • Sound grasp of security, row-level access control, secrets and data protection.
  • Comfort integrating third-party and AI/LLM APIs into real operational workflows.
  • DevOps fundamentals: Git, CI/CD, environments, monitoring and backups.
  • Clear communicator able to work directly with non-technical leadership and to mentor junior engineers.
  • Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent demonstrable capability
  • a portfolio or GitHub is a strong plus.
  • Based in or able to work from Tema/Accra with occasional on-site presence.
  • Exceptional standards, ownership and judgement. Familiarity with Supabase/Postgres RLS, Deno edge functions, TanStack/React and AI integration is a distinct advantage.
